Chapter 36

Yun Xiu glanced at the black crow, which was in a miserable state of death. She waved her hand. “That bird is an ominous sign. Hurry up and deal with it. Move the box to the innermost part of the warehouse so that it doesn’t block the path.”

That set of red gold head ornaments were exquisite, but she would never wear it. Wet Nurse Dong hid her disgust and showed a smile. The palace servants obeyed and quickly called a few eunuchs to come in. Within a short while, they moved the congratulatory gifts out.

“Yinqi said he went to pick a pony, but how long should that take?” Seeing that the light was just right, Yun Xiu skipped the topic of the imperial noble consort. She smiled lightly, and chatted with the palace servant. “He likes pure white and so do We…”

Recently, Yikun Palace had gradually become busy. It was full of joy. In five days, it would be Yintang’s one month ceremony.

Because she diligently took the tonic, she did not have pent up energy . Yun Xiu’s state now was no different from before she gave birth.

Not only had her original complexion been restored, but she was also a little plumper. She was radiant and even more beautiful than before.

She was about to complete her confinement period. With the permission of the imperial doctor, Yun Xiu bid farewell to the “greasy” yesterday, took a good bath, and now was wearing a warm fox fur collar as she leaned against a cushion.

She watched the imperial noble consort’s congratulatory gifts go away and chatted about Yinqi’s interesting stories. She half-closed her eyes, a little dazed, and asked, “What time is it?”

“It’s late afternoon, ma’am.” Wen Yuan said softly, “The ninth prince must have woken up. This servant will bring him here.”

Yun Xiu groaned, feeling that something was wrong. She thought about it carefully…

Oh right, the emperor.

The emperor wanted to come to Yikun Palace for lunch every day, but now she didn’t even see him. He didn’t even send someone to inform her.

— This was not his usual style.

If he didn’t come, she was more at ease. She was only slightly puzzled for a moment, and then promptly forgot about Kangxi.

“Go get Little Nine…” Yun Xiu said softly. Before she finished speaking, Wet Nurse Dong hurried in with a familiar eunuch. When the little eunuch saw her, he kowtowed as if he had found a saviour.

“Servant Fu Shun pays respects to Consort Yi! The sixth prince was poisoned and fell asleep after drinking medicine. As a result… Consort De made a fuss in Yuqing Palace, and even angered the fifth prince…”

Fu Shun quickly described the situation in the stables, and then repeated Consort De’s question. He then said anxiously, “The emperor is furious, but Consort De was not afraid to let go of the sixth prince’s hand and instead complained about his suffering. Yuqing Palace was full of the sounds of crying. The crown prince took advantage of the chaos and ordered this servant to sneak away and come ask Consort Yi for help!”

After hearing Fu Shun’s words, Yun Xiu’s face sank.

Fu Shun took a breath, raised his head, and said like a cannonball, “The crown prince said, as long as the Consort Yi sends someone to ask to see the empress dowager, and sends Wet Nurse Dong to accompany this servant to Yuqing Palace, the emperor will take care and will restrain his anger…”

He Zhu’er also specifically told him that the Consort Yi was in confinement and could not come in person. He must not let her worry! There was no need to repeat this.

Before he finished speaking, Yun Xiu closed her eyes and said coldly, “Rui Zhu, go to Ningshou Palace, don’t delay.”

Rui Zhu quickly lifted the curtain and ran out hastily. He got up and let out a small sigh of relief. Before he could complete his sigh, he choked.

His eyes widened. Consort Yi?!

“Consort De deserves a lesson. We do not like her.” Yun Xiu tore off the fox fur. Her red lips were tightly pressed and there was an icy chill in her peach eyes. “Prepare the sedan chair!”

Yuqing Palace.

The palace servants who served the third prince knew that they could not get involved. They led Yinzhi to leave early. Yinzhen and Yinqi refused to leave. They stayed by the bed. One looked at Consort De from time to time, and the other eagerly watched Yinzuo.

After Consort De hissed and questioned the fifth prince, Yuqing Palace completely fell silent.

When had Yinqi seen such a scene?

He was well protected by the empress dowager since he was a child, and he was greatly loved by his biological mother. Imperial father cared more and more about him. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he grew up well cared for.

Suddenly, he faced a pair of extremely cruel apricot eyes. The fifth prince was completely stunned. He took a step back and his eyes slowly turned red.

Yinqi stammered and explained in Manchurian, “I didn’t know that sixth younger brother, that sixth younger brother was poisoned… I led him to pick a horse, and his hand was very hot…”

The crown prince suddenly lowered his face and gave He Zhu’er a wink. He stood in front of Yinqi. His clear voice held a hint of warning, “Consort De, it was Yinqi who saved Yinzuo. Us, third younger brother, and fourth younger brother saw him! Sixth younger brother has drunk the medicine and has fallen asleep. He will recover soon.”

Consort De stared closely at the crown prince. She smiled after a while and slowly calmed down.

She turned her head to look at Yinzuo on the bed with tears streaming down her face. She felt a sharp pain in her heart.

The corners of Consort De’s mouth twitched. She ignored the sudden pain in her lower body, and said softly, “This is the Crown Prince’s Yuqing Palace. What the crown prince says will naturally be right.”

As she spoke, her gaze fell on the sachet not far away. The sachet was placed neatly on the tray and was carefully watched over by the imperial doctor. It was something very strange to Consort De.

It was such a poison that suddenly appeared on Yinzuo’s body, and he even wore it close to himself…

“Yinzuo did not get this poison in Yonghe Palace! How did it appear? Can the Crown Prince explain this to me?” Consort De paused and sneered. She looked at the trembling Yinzhen indifferently, and asked, “Was it you?!”

As soon as these words came out, Yinzhen yelled ‘no’. He wiped his face, turned around, and ran away. Everyone was shocked and their expressions all changed.

“Fourth younger brother! He Zhu’er! Go after him!”

After the crown prince ordered them, he took a deep breath and smiled angrily.

Even though he was still a boy, he was also the heir apparent of the Qing Dynasty. How could he allow a concubine to question him?

In the next moment, Kangxi’s icy voice filled the hall, “Mrs. Wuya, that’s enough.”

…

Almost no one knew how long the emperor had been standing there for and how much he had listened to. They only knew that today… would not be good.

Consort De turned her head. Her cheeks suddenly turned pale and her tears flowed even more fiercely.

She lay straight on the ground, restrained her ruthlessness, covered her face, and cried bitterly. “Your Majesty, Yinzuo is only four years old! He was smart ever since he was a child. Your Majesty bestowed upon him a good name, and praised him several times… How ruthless is the person who poisoned him? It almost killed this concubine! In the afternoon, Yinzuo said that he would come to see the ponies. He smiled very happily, and said that this was the first time the second prince invited him… He could temporarily leave his mother and his frail younger sister behind. He desperately wanted to see the horses…”

Her voice was shrill and desperate. In an instant, several young maids showed expressions of impatience.

Kangxi stood with his hands behind his back. He looked at Consort De with no expression on his face, and kept silent, just listening to her.

With a cold face, the crown prince slowly clenched his fists.

Consort De put on a highly skillful show…

Yinqi lowered his head. Tears were rolling down his face and he couldn’t stop feeling wronged.

He saw it all! Imperial father came later, so he didn’t hear Consort De questioning him.

He wanted to go out to find his fourth older brother.

…

Consort De had been crying for a long time and almost fainted from crying. “… This concubine is begging Your Majesty to make a decision for this concubine, and for Little Six!”

She held Yinzuo’s hot hand. She stood up tremblingly while whimpering, and was about to kneel down to the imperial doctor. “Even if We give up Our dignity and completely break Our body, We want Yinzuo to be safe and sound…”

At this moment, a cold female voice suddenly came from outside the hall. “Give up your dignity? Okay.”

Everyone stared at Yun Xiu in disbelief. Yun Xiu, who was wrapped in a blue cloak and holding a heater, came into the light with a mocking smile on her lips.

She came in a hurry and didn’t care about putting on a bit of makeup. She was like the red glow reflecting off the clouds in a sunset. She was a ray of light in the dark hall.

Yinqi immediately raised his head. His eyes suddenly lit up!

The emperor was startled. He couldn’t help but stride forward. It took him three steps to support Yun Xiu. His deep frown flattened out briefly before returning.

“Nonsense!” Kangxi tried his best to suppress the anger in his heart, so as not to vent it on the person in front of him.

Holding Yun Xiu’s somewhat cold hand, he reprimanded in a low voice, “Why didn’t you stay in confinement? What are you doing here? Wen Yuan, why don’t you help your master go back to lie down?!”

Yun Xiu forced a smile. She shook her head and looked up at Kangxi. “This concubine heard that the sixth prince was poisoned, and that Little Five was involved…”

As she said that, she swallowed with tears in her eyes. “Little Six has a fever and Yinqi was the first to discover it. But what did Consort De say? She suspected that Yinqi was the one who poisoned him, and even carelessly tried to implicate His Highness, The Crown Prince.”

Yun Xiu cried so much that she was on the verge of falling. She was almost unable to stand still. “If the people around Yinqi hadn’t told this concubine, this concubine wouldn’t have known about it. Your Majesty, Little Five has been wronged so far. How can this concubine feel at ease in confinement as his mother?!”

At the same time, Yinqi held back his tears. He sobbed and called out ‘Mother’.

The voice was very small, and Yun Xiu seemed as if she was unable to bear it all at once.

She let go of the emperor’s hand, slowly stepped forward, and stood by the bed. She lowered her head and slapped Consort De hard.

The crown prince opened his mouth slightly: “…”

Consort Mother Yi… shed her tears so quickly?

After hitting her, Yun Xiu thought it wasn’t enough. She looked at her for a few seconds, and then slapped her on the left side of her face, making it a symmetrical move.

It was also a crisp sound that completely stunned Consort De!

The crown prince was shocked and wasn’t angry anymore. He glanced at Kangxi’s expression, before saying, “What is the meaning of this, Consort Yi?! Yinzuo is still sick! Even if Consort De held a grudge against Us and angered Little Five, it was a desperate reaction. You’ve gone too far…”

“Baocheng,” Kangxi shouted in a deep voice. “Stop talking.”

The crown prince’s voice stopped abruptly. He lowered his head in response and then stepped aside.

“Your Majesty.” Yun Xiu turned around slowly. She looked at Kangxi with teary eyes and was about to bend her knees, “This concubine was angry. If Your Majesty wants to scold or punish this concubine, then this concubine will bear it.”

Kangxi supported her, sighed lightly, and did not reprimand her.

He looked at the fifth prince, who was at a loss. “Yinqi, your mother is tired and can’t stand the wind. Why don’t you help her go rest?”

Consort De covered her face. She finally came to her senses. When she heard this, she couldn’t believe it.

Mrs. Guo Luoluo was so arrogant, so domineering. She wished she could eat her alive…

But the emperor didn’t blame her at all and his tone was quite affectionate. Consort De suddenly felt ridiculed.

She had been jerked around for so many years, but she had never gotten a clear understanding of the emperor’s favour, so she lived like a joke.

She laughed miserably. “Your Majesty, my Yinzuo was poisoned. He drank the antidote, but he still hasn’t woken up. You are dissatisfied with this concubine, and this concubine recognises that, but what about Yinzuo? His mother is being bullied. Did you pretend that you didn’t see it?!”

Kangxi interrupted her indifferently, “We have seen it all.”

“We watched you control the servants, place the chess pieces, use your child to plot against others, disrespect the crown prince, and all that empty slander…” Kangxi looked at her with extreme disgust. He met Consort De’s gradually surprised and fearful eyes.

“You are Yinzhen and Yinzuo’s biological mother. Because of those two princes, We have promoted you to be Our Consort.” Kangxi turned his jade ring and smiled. “You have no motherly affection for Yinzhen, but you think too much of Yinzuo.”

“We forgave you when you gave birth to Moyaqi! But what did you do? You have a vicious heart and don’t know how to reflect on your actions. You are no longer worthy of the word Virtue1.”

“And Yinzuo…” Kangxi recalled that the children should not be subjected to the consequences of their parents. He calmed down. Regret flashed across his face, which was mixed with slight regret.

“We decree that Consort De, Mrs. Wuya will be demoted to Imperial Concubine, and she will contemplate her mistakes behind closed doors for two months.” The emperor paused, and then said softly: “…The sixth prince, Yinzuo, will inherit Our deceased Prince Rong’s title. He will be demoted from a prince of first rank, to a prince of second rank. Since he was young, he was raised in the palace. His food and clothing expenses were equal to those of an imperial prince!”

The two decrees, like two strikes of lightning, hit the hearts of everyone in Yuqing Palace.

Finally, Kangxi calmly said, “Liang Jiugong, draft the decree.”

1.(德) This is the character for Consort De’s title, De, and it translates to virtue/morals.

  1. Damn, as much as I don’t like Consort De I do have to feel bad for the 6th prince. I guess demoting the 6th prince is the only way for Consort De to continue to raise him, so maybe that’s why Kangxi did it

    1. Reading lots of imperial novel, actually, Yinzuo inheriting the Prince Rong title might not be a demotion. But might save his life. He was poisoned for the sake of power struggle. But as far as I remember, the male siblings of emperor usually have their own county to rule. So no more poisoning. Unless by Yinzuo’s own child to inherit the title maybe?

  2. Lol it’s satisfying to see Consort Yi slapped her twice. No wonder people said words is sharper than sword. I pity Yinzhen. How come his own mother dared to blame him for what happened to his younger brother.
